Mexican Gothic was enjoyable, with a setup reminiscent of Rebecca, the Edwardian tones of a family,
in this case, transported to Mexico. The setting is a decrepit house, shrouded in fog.
The family members keep the house dark, quiet. The wizened patriarch is dying, very slowly.
The female protagonist is sent to the house to check on her cousin, recently married into
the family.
Of gothic horror, I enjoyed it. Compared to other horrors, though, I think the style lacked the drive of other books, especially as we approached the climax. It felt flat in its language. Much was happening but the telling of what was transpiring felt too removed, like the author had run out of steam.
Regardless, I believe the book is a strong 4 of 5.
